A happy ending without Love ??

I am busy reading my girls the book “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane ” by Kate DiCamillio  .  She also wrote The Tale of Despereaux .    It is about Edward Tulane, a cold-hearted and proud toy rabbit who loves only himself until he is separated from the little girls who adores him and travels across the country, acquiring new owners and listening to their hopes, dreams and histories.

It is a beautifully written story and on Chapter 4  the grandmother, Pellegrina, is telling the little girl a bedtime story, but it is aimed at Edward Tulane.  The story does not have a happy ending at all, in fact, in order for my girls to not get upset I could not stop laughing as it was so ludicrous. In a nutshell, a cold-hearted, beautiful princess who loves no one and has swallowed her latest beaus ring, gets lost in the wood, turned into a warthog, and killed by the Kings huntsmen and fed to the castle.  The cook puts the ring onto her finger.  I know it sounds gruesome, but it is not written like that.

It was this passage that made me think …

” The end. ”

“The end?” said Abilene indignantly.

“Yes,” said Pellegrina, “the end.”

“But it can’t be. ”

“Why can’t it be?.”

“Because it came too  quickly.  Because no one is living happily ever after, that’s why.”

“Ah, and so.” Pellegrina nodded.  She was quiet for a moment.  “But answer me this : how can a story end happily is there is no love?  But.  Well.  It is late.  And you must go to sleep.

Can a story, your personal story, your life , live happily without love ?  Something to think about.  I think not, because love, of a person, a child, an animal, is what gives us happiness.  Without love to give , to share and to take, what happiness do we have ?
